Truespeak checks
Quick check for the table: set what’s being spoken to, type the d20, get the answer. Nothing here is saved.
Pre-filled from the sheet at the level picked above; change it for anyone else.
Full calculator
Uses the level picked at the top. Pick an utterance, then flip the toggles.
For being hurt or held while speaking. Utterances are spell-like abilities, so these use the 3.5 Concentration DCs with the utterance’s effective spell level.
Truespeak DCs
| Target | Base DC | At level 8 |
|---|---|---|
| Creature (Evolving Mind) | 15 + 2 × CR (PCs: level) | CR 8: 31 |
| Using a creature’s personal truename | 15 + 2 × CR + 2. Their save DC +2 and your SR check +2. | CR 8: 33 (roll 5+) |
| Yourself / recitations | Your personal truename: 15 + 2 × HD + 2, with +4 competence on your check | 33 (you roll +31) |
| Place (Perfected Map) | 25 + 5 × utterance level (+5 magical location) | Fog from the Void: 30 (35) |
| Magic item (Crafted Tool) | 15 + 2 × item caster level | CL 5: 25 |
| Nonmagical object (Crafted Tool) | 25 | 25 (roll any) |
DC modifiers
| Modifier | DC change | When |
|---|---|---|
| Law of Resistance | +2 each | Per earlier success with the same utterance today. Failures don’t count. |
| Extend Utterance | +5 | Doubles duration (not concentration or instantaneous) |
| Overcome spell resistance | +5 | Automatically beats the target’s SR |
| Raise effective spell level | +4 per level | Beat globes, higher Concentration level |
| Fog from the Void as solid fog | +10 | That utterance only |
| Magical location | +5 | Perfected Map utterances |
Utterance save DC (the target’s save, not your check): 10 + ½ truenamer level + Cha modifier = 14 at level 8. Range 60 ft. unless noted. Uttering defensively: −5 on your Truespeak check per foe who could hit you, and the utterance doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity.
Laws
Each successful use of the same utterance in a day adds +2 to its DC. A failed check doesn’t raise it.
Utterances are spell-like abilities, so spell resistance applies (Tome of Magic p. 233). Beat it with a caster level check: d20 + truenamer level (d20 + 8 at level 8). Spell Penetration (+2) and Greater Spell Penetration (+2 more) apply. You can instead add +5 to the Truespeak DC to overcome it automatically.
Utterances work at 60 ft. unless their entry says otherwise (Fortify Armor 30 ft., Analyze Item touch).
An utterance counts as its utterance level for Concentration checks and for interactions like globe of invulnerability. Each +1 to its effective spell level adds +4 to the Truespeak DC.
While an utterance with a duration is active, you can’t speak it again. Its reverse counts as the same utterance. A different-level version is a different utterance.
Truename research
Finding a creature’s personal truename (Tome of Magic). Uses the level picked at the top.
Different spells stack; repeats of the same spell don’t. An obscure subject needs at least one.
Once you know it
- Speaking a personal truename adds +2 to the Truespeak DC.
- Utterances that use it get +2 to their save DC and +2 on your caster level check against that creature’s SR.
- The +4 competence bonus applies only to your own personal truename.
- You can also identify an utterance someone else speaks: a Truespeak check as a free action, even off your turn, against the DC to speak that utterance.
Study
Book of Vile Darkness pp. 26–27. Uses the level picked at the top.
The offering
- It must be alive and have an Intelligence of 3 or higher. Usually a humanoid, but a dark power might ask for anything from a medusa to a giant to a beholder.
- The victim is bound or otherwise held still so the ceremony can build to the killing.
- Blood is often a sacred symbol, and spilling it dedicates the blood (and sometimes the soul) to the power. Bloodless methods are possible but rarely preferred.
The setting
- The rite takes time and usually involves extra participants and unholy trappings.
- For ritual gear, see the executioner tools and other equipment in Chapter 3.
- Each deity has its own tastes in offerings. Treat the elements and boons here as a starting point.
How the rite works
- It has to be a real ceremony at a place dedicated to the deity. Simply dedicating foes you kill doesn’t count.
- The celebrant makes one Knowledge (religion) check per victim, adding the element modifiers below, and uses the best result.
- A follower who performs several rites doesn’t stack the element bonuses across them; each victim gets its own check.
- The celebrant picks the boon to pray for. The deity may grant a different one, especially if the check beats the DC by a lot.
- These are sample boons from an evil deity. Each deity has its own preferences and rewards, so your DM sets the real list.
Choose the amount before rolling. A failed check gives nothing.
Boons by check result
With several victims, each gets its own check and the celebrant uses the best one. The deity may grant a different boon than the one sought, especially on a result well above its DC. “Per HD” boons affect one witness (or weapon) per HD of the victim; the number updates with the HD above.
| DC | Boon (24 hours unless noted) |
|---|
Dark craft
- Dark craft XP: DC × 3 (minimum DC 15). Dark craft gp: DC × 5 (minimum DC 20).
- They have no physical form; the celebrant feels them like a shadow on the soul.
- They can’t buy goods or raise your level. They replace real gp or XP only when making a magic item.
- Only one batch of each can go toward a single item, and crafting time doesn’t change.
- Any item made with them, even 1 gp or 1 XP, is tainted with evil and can be sensed like an object of lasting evil.
- They can be combined with the destruction of souls to make items even easier to build (see Souls as Power in the same chapter).
Dark craft examples
| DC | Dark craft XP | Dark craft gp | Covers (crafting costs half the price in gp and 1/25 in XP) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 45 | — | XP for an item priced up to 1,125 gp |
| 20 | 60 | 100 | XP up to 1,500 gp; gold for an item up to 200 gp |
| 30 | 90 | 150 | XP up to 2,250 gp; gold up to 300 gp |
| 40 | 120 | 200 | XP up to 3,000 gp; gold up to 400 gp |
| 50 | 150 | 250 | XP up to 3,750 gp; gold up to 500 gp |
Only one batch of each applies per item, so dark craft covers the XP of mid-priced items far better than their gold.
